Private organs of males - such as penis and testicles (or testes) - belong to their external reproductive system. Of these, penis plays a key role in sexual function and urination; testicles produce sperm and testosterone. It is worth your while to know of the 5 reasons a man’s private organ may become small.

Penis is a sexual organ helping males urinate, have sexual intercourse and ejaculate. Penis has a key role to play in reproductive system of men. Males having a micro-penis have a relatively small-sized penis – when compared to most others. But, micro-penis does have the same structure as that a normal-sized penis. This condition owes its roots to genetic and / or endocrinal factors.

A micro-penis need not worry you much. It functions normally as long as you do not have other medical conditions. Males having micro-penis can do all things others do; they can pee normally and have penile erection while romancing a partner.

So, what are the 5 reasons a man's private organ may become small?

Not stopping with the above, there are several other reasons for your penis to become small. But, it is of use to know of the 5 likely reasons.

1- Prostate surgery – this surgery involves the removal of your prostate. This may turn your penis to shrink as your nerves and tissues tun the risk of getting damaged. Vacuum Erection Devices (VEDs) are recommended to men undergoing this surgical procedure. You may also try penis stretching exercises.

2- Genetically Engorged Suprapubic Fat Pad (GEFP) – this condition enlarges the fat-pad above your penis. This may turn your penile shaft to appear short. This is primarily a hereditary condition but worsens as you gain bodyweight.

  • GEFP makes your penis appear buried under excess fats. You may need to reduce weight to make your private part appear big. But this is only a temporary solution. A permanent fix may require monsplasty (fat-pad removal) and reconstruction of your urological system.

3- Overactive Sympathetic Nervous System – this is a medical condition wherein males experience shrinkage of penile size. Males living with chronic stress, anxieties etc. more likely experience it.

4- Detached Dartos Fascia – this can stunt growth of your penis. Dartos fascia is a thin muscle-layer connecting the penile shaft to your scrotal bags. Fascia may get deformed owing to your genetic-make-up. This causes penile retraction. Surgical reconstruction of the dartos fascia is recommended in combination with monsplasty and penis-lengthening procedures.

5- Inadequate arterial flow – this is one of the many reasons your penis shrinks in size. Inadequate blood flow i.e., poor circulation to penile tissues can significantly impact both penile size and structure; risk factors being -

  • Age – men aged over 50 years are more vulnerable
  • Incidence of diabetes mellitus – especially type 2 - with raised A1C levels can worsen this
  • Complications arising off post-prostate-surgery
  • Incomplete penile engorgement

A handful of other reasons may contribute shortening your private-organ. For example, chronic stress and anxieties –stressful living directly raises cortisol. More cortisol lowers your T-levels and also restricts flow of blood. In addition, anxieties can contract penile muscles.

Use of alcohol as well as smoking affects growth of your penis. Excessive intake of alcohol contributes to hormonal imbalance and this further leads to erectile dysfunction. This can further shrink your penis.

Also, lack of use (Disuse atrophy) - Like your other tissues or muscles, your penis also requires regular-stimulation. This helps maintain its integrity. Disuse atrophy is a result of long periods without erections; such periods make tissues lose elasticity shrinks your private part.

Is smaller penis a problem to males?

A smaller penis necessarily may not cause problems to men. But a small-sized penis size may be indicative of genetic, hormonal, and / or developmental conditions.

You need to know penis size is not same for all males. Size varies from one man to another.

Can you increase penis size?

There is no way you can alter the size of your private parts like penis. However, there are a few techniques to make your penis appear bigger in size. You may try penile stretching (to make it lengthy) and jelqing (to add girth).

Several penile enlargement procedures are tried to increase the size of cavernous-cylinder of your penis and also to stimulate blood flow to enhance its hardness.

Foods to boost penis health

There are a few foods males can eat to boost your penile health.

You can try pumpkin seeds; these are rich sources of in zinc and nutrients vital for testosterone production. Fatty fish, rich in omega-3 fatty acids such as salmon, mackerel, and trout can support blood circulation and your cardiovascular health.

Rice, whole-grain cereals or bread made of such whole-grains, dry fruits, and dark chocolate are some foods to improve health of your penis.

When to approach your sexologist?

If you see a chronic reduction in your penis size - also, accompanied by other adverse symptoms such as pain or erectile dysfunction, you need to approach your sexologist without waiting too long.

In order to manage this condition, you ,may also need to make some changes to your daily habits. You need to maintain a healthy body weight, quit smoking, and work out on a regular basis. These practices can create a positive effect on your penile health; these also have the potential to slow-down shrinkage of penis and may in fact reverse such conditions.

You can check with your healthcare provider / sexologist and pursue medication plans he / she prescribes. Depending on your penile condition and its underlying cause, your sexologist will likely prescribe drugs such as PDE - type 5 inhibitors (e.g., sildenafil, tadalafil, etc.). These meds improve blood flow to penile parts / pelvic floor and help keep erectile problems at bay.

Lastly, in order to address issues relating to mental health, you may require counseling. These sessions help you overcome this condition. However, in some rare cases, surgical interventions may be recommended. This might include procedures like penile implants.
